We have oral exams, we write essays at school, at university.
We take tests to obtain our driving license, our diplomas, our job, our
promotion. We wring our hands, we blush, we jostle, we pocket the cynical
remarks of the examiners. We fulfil requests, solve tasks, and try to do our
best. After that, we hope to be chosen, admitted, honoured. If we succeed, we
will rejoice and believe that humiliation still made some sense. Maybe we could
have stood up for ourselves, we could have left it all, but we decided to stay
and take the test at all costs; and if we have to, we can convince ourselves
that it was a good choice. The examining board smiles at us, they praise us,
and congratulate us. However, we really have no idea what they really think of
us, why they chose us.
